Well-built and intuitive, the Karelian Bear Dog has ancestors that possibly date back to the Stone Age. They have exceptional noses, a triangular-shaped head, pricked years, and a tail that curls over the back. Their medium-length double coat is black with white markings. They are social, brave, and persistent dogs that can have an independent streak. They are self-assured, sure-footed, and spirited. They were originally bred to bark at bears and drive them up trees.
